The town of Ermoupolis stands out among the Greek towns because of its elegant architecture. During the boom of the town’s growth in the second half of the 19th century, it became a tradition to employ skilled artists to decorate the interior of the town’s public and private buildings with elaborate mural painting.
Since 1998, Maria Xagorari has been working privately and in groups of artists and restorers, on commissions to revive the old murals, or create new ones in both public and private buildings.
Bellow are examples of this charming and painstaiking work.
The Apollo Theatre
Collaboration with Dimitris’ Fortsas group of artists to restore the glory of the historic theatre with new murals.
Ermoupolis Town Hall
Collaboration with Anna Vassilaki in decorating the Town Hall with original murals in the spirit of the town’s neoclassic style.
Collaboration with Dionisis Palmas to complete the old murals which had been destroyed or covered over the years, after the restoring team uncovered and fixed all that could be saved.
“A mural painting, unlike visual artworks of other forms, is inseparably connected to the architecture of each building, the lifestyle and taste of its owners and the feeling they desire the artwork to generate. It is my pleasure to assist people decide on an image that will give them pride and joy to live with and will add to the value of their building in a timeless manner. So, the process of commissioning a mural artwork is one that involves considerable preliminary interaction between myself and the customers, in order for me to get acquainted to their special needs and propose accordingly.”
Selected images from private residences, chapels, hotels and restaurants that have been decorated by Maria Xagorari.
